Creating a Sacred Space
Over the past 18 + years that I’ve been providing Reiki treatments and Hypnotherapy sessions, I’ve learned that the environment that I do this work in, is an important partner in the healing work being done.
Your Sacred Space
Whether you work in the healing arts or would like your own special area of your home to meditate & pray, giving your care and your attention to the space so that it works with you, will enhance your sacred experience. By specifically designating an area or room to be used for your healing, we set an intent of what we expect to happen in said space, as in “this is where I come to relax, recuperate and regenerate.” I’ve often noticed when my clients step into my Reiki room they let out an audible sigh of relief. They know that this is their time for them without interruption.
We in the healing arts know that the best work happens when our guest can deeply relax thus allowing the induction of the relaxation response (opposite to the stress response). Our bodies and soul will do their best work in self-healing when we allow ourselves to relax deeply and let go. Our busy, hectic lives and our busy monkey mind will do its best to interfere with our healing time. We need to provide for our guests (and ourselves) a space that assists with the “turning off” and “reconnecting to self”, so that the love and peace can flow, literally and figuratively.
The moment my guest steps into my Reiki Room the healing process has begun. My sacred space reflects just that, all that is sacred to me and are reflections of love, peace, and harmony. Outlined below is a guide to my personal sacred space. Your space should reflect you and all that is sacred to you.
Relax the Senses.
Before my guest even enters my Reiki room, the first thing they hear is soft Reiki music playing in the background. I play Reiki music in my space even when I don’t have a client, as it cleanses the space and enhances the Reiki energy. I also meditate daily to Reiki music. The soft, gentle tones of the instrumental music work wonderfully for blocking out any outside noise and can soothe the anxious mind. Reiki music is usually composed and performed by Reiki practitioners and has special healing properties on its own.
Also contributing to the relaxing atmosphere of my sacred workspace is the aromatherapy from the diffusing of pure essential oils. It is important to ensure that guests are not bombarded with harsh chemical scents or offensive smells from a nearby kitchen or bathroom. Many people have sensitivities to chemicals typically used in store-bought air fresheners and perfumes, so those products are best avoided. The aromas from pure essential oils possess healing properties as well, so careful consideration should be given to what you choose to diffuse. Personally, I tend to stick with more earthy and natural grounding scents, such as Frankincense, Clove, vanilla, cedarwood, and lavender. During meditation I like to put a drop of frankincense on my third eye and each hand, to again enhance my experience.
The Décor
The décor of your sacred space should reflect all that is sacred to you and should be as unique as you are as an individual. For instance, my space has comfortable furniture, warm blankets, fluffy pillows, meditation cushions, Buddhas, crystals, plants, angels, spiritual books, gifts from students/clients, calligraphy made by my spiritual mentor, sculptures, and paintings made by my daughter Sara. Everything in my space reminds me that life is eternal and that there is an endless supply of peace/love always available to us all.
The Energy/The Vibe
I’ve been told over the years by my clients/guests that they love to enter into my home and my Reiki room, because of “how it feels.” I so love to hear this from my guests, as it confirms to me that I’m creating a healing space.
Often they can’t explain exactly what provides these positive feelings, but I believe it’s due to two things. One is that on a subconscious/spiritual level we’ve made an agreement in this lifetime that I will assist them on their path of well-being, and by entering my sacred space this contract will be fulfilled. Secondly, I give extra attention to the energy of my home and Reiki space by ensuring that I clear the space of all unwanted energies. I do this by charging the energy of my home with Reiki and prayer. When my guests leave, I make sure their energy goes with them. In my opinion, this is crucial to maintaining a sacred space.
I believe that we are all far more sensitive to subtle energy than what most of us realize. When entering a space and it has an uncomfortable feeling about it, trust that feeling and know that energy clearing is required. Your sacred space should not be cluttered with piles of anything! Negative energy loves to hang out in clutter, so it’s imperative that your space is kept clear of clutter, dust, and unnecessary items. Open windows and let the sunlight in for additional clearing.
Final Thoughts
The selection of items in your space goes so beyond just decorating or filling up the room. Please remember that your sacred space is an extension of the deepest most sacred part of yourself. Keeping that information close will assist you in your healing work.
I’m always happy to assist my clients and students clearing unwanted energies from their home and setting up their sacred space.
