Magical Moments
Thirteen years ago, was the last time I saw my daughter Sara. Little did I know that 2 days later she would be in a motor vehicle accident and she would be gone forever.
Our last day together was nothing short of magical.
It was an unusually warm sunny day in northern Alberta. We invited Sara and her husband over for a bbq after work. I was busy with reiki clients all day, and Sara had arrived at our home just before my last client. So she and her dad Kim sat out on our deck to enjoy the sunshine and visited while he cooked our dinner.
I remember finishing up with my last client and hearing the two of them laughing together and I could not wait to join them.
I remember going out onto the deck and seeing Sara with her long dark beautiful hair in a ponytail, sun glasses on (as always) and her big perfect smile. The three of us sat together so relaxed, enjoying one another’s company & our lives seemed perfect. Kim and I always said we knew Sara before she was born and this time together reminded me of our soul connection.
As Sara shared with us her excitement for her upcoming honeymoon in Hawaii, I would catch myself looking at my little girl thinking she was a grown woman now with a biology degree, a husband and hopefully one day her own family. We couldn’t be more proud of her.
Eventually Sara’s husband Will arrived from work, as did my sister who was living with us at the time. We all enjoyed a lovely dinner together.
After dinner we tidied the kitchen, while Sara and I chatted about their upcoming honeymoon. I remember glancing at her stomach and intuitively knew she would never have children. Sara knowing me so well could tell when “I knew” something and asked me what was I seeing? I quickly changed the topic and we enjoyed the rest of the evening together. These times were so easy, just being together.
When Sara and Will decided it was time to go to their home, I followed them to the door and looked at Sara and thought “ my god I love this child” and felt like my heart was going to burst with love for her. We hugged and said I love you, I remember thinking “don’t let go”.
Sadly the unseasonably warm March weather brought freezing rain and turned the highway Sara drove to work on into sheer ice. Our lives would never be the same.
I am beyond grateful for the magical evening we spent with Sara and realize not all grieving parents are so fortunate. Every time I speak of this magical day I am reminded how blessed I truly am. Yes I am heartbroken and miss Sara every single day but I know without doubt she knew she was loved and cherished by her parents.
Thirteen years later the memory of this day still gets me through my most difficult days. I am eternally grateful to all those who allow me to tell this story, as many times as I need to tell it, which I suspect will be till the day I take my last breath.
