Newsletter for May 2024

The month of May and springtime brings forth the energy of renewal and hope.  For those of us living in the northern hemisphere, the sun shines brighter and longer, color returns to our world with the greening of the trees and the grass and flower beds/pots are filled with a myriad of colors.  With the warmth and beauty returning in May it seems only fitting that this is the month we celebrate motherhood.

The second Sunday in May is celebrated as Mother’s day, but there is also a lesser known day of recognition in May for mothers.  The first Sunday in May is International Bereaved Mother’s Day.  This day is dedicated to all mothers who have lost a child, including those who suffer loss from miscarriage and infertility.

You may wonder why days such as Bereaved Mother’s Day are so important.  Studies show that 94% of bereaved mothers experience what is known as “enduring grief’, which basically means we grieve for our children for the rest of our life. Bereaved moms experience elevated risks of depression and anxiety for more than a decade following their loss.  When your child dies your core beliefs and expectations of your life experience are completely shattered and nothing in your world makes sense anymore. It takes time and loving attention to find your center once again.

I encourage moms to share their feelings, stories and memories of their child. When you’re a bereaved mom, composing a letter to your child can be so helpful in dealing with your grief. As many of you know I wrote the book A New Normal -A grieving mothers’ journey from loss to healing about my experience as a bereaved mother and included a selection of the letters I wrote to my daughter Sara.  These letters are raw and filled with pain, but also with hope and so much love.

If you love someone who is a bereaved mom, a simple “you’re on my mind today” or “I’m thinking of you today”, is a gentle acknowledgement of her loss. She may want to do something special in memory of her child or she may not.  She should be encouraged to do whatever feels right to take care of herself.

Personally, I will connect with my daughter Sara through meditation and amongst the trees. You see Sara was a biologist and she never met an animal she didn’t love and spent her days outdoors, often in the forest. My book includes a chapter on how to find your center once again, and there is a meditation specifically for bereaved moms to connect with the energy of their child.  We’ve included a link here for you to have a listen to the guided meditation.

I wish a gentle Bereaved Mother’s Day, to all the moms who hold their children in their heart instead of their arms. I wish all mothers everywhere, without exception a blessed and peaceful Mothers Day.

Namaste my friends,

Loralee
